I was recently interviewing Python developers for a job opening. And I thought I'd share my unconventional methods for assessing a developer's skill with Python.
This is distinct from "how well do they know Python." Because I don't care how well they can recite arcane linguistic details. In terms of the Best python institute in Delhi you can book yourself a demo at Python Training institute.
Instead, I want to see if they can balance getting things done with doing things right in situations that aren't too dissimilar to what I might be paying them to do.
So, instead of having them draw bubble sort on a whiteboard or something, here are a few things I might do:
1) Analyze CSV data
I tell them to bring their laptop to the interview and that it should be configured for Python development. Click here to take admission in Python Training Institute for python course.
I'll send them a CSV file containing some interesting data. Nutrition information for various foods, for example - something along those lines. And I'll ask them to write a program that will ingest the data and answer questions about it.
Begin with the most basic question: "What is the average value of the "calories" column?"
So I know they can at the very least open the file and slurp up the data.
Then something a little more intriguing, like "Sort the foods by their protein-to-calorie ratio."
And so forth.
I don't care if they use Pandas, the CSV module, or some obscure library. I don't care if they use PyCharm, Vim, or Nano. I don't mind if they look it up online during the interview unless it's something basic.
All I care about is that they CAN figure it out.
2) Use HTTP to communicate with JSON.
I created a todo-list web service that you can GET, PUT, and POST to over the network. And I give them the address as well as a short document that fully describes its API...
How to create new tasks, list incomplete tasks, mark tasks as completed, and so on.
And I walk them through the process of writing some code that tests it. Because in today's world, we have to write a lot of glue code with web services like this.
If they haven't done anything like this before - perhaps they've just had jobs where it wasn't required, for example - that's even better.
Because I can give them a quick tutorial on how to use the "requests" module and see if they can use it immediately to create simple API interactions.
And this allows me to assess their ability to quickly learn a library and apply it in real-world code... YET ANOTHER important skill in today's world.
3) Version Control Based on Tests
I'll instruct them to create a simple library using test-driven development.
The word "simple" is stressed. I'm not going to request that they write a JIT compiler for a C-like language.
Creating integer sequences is a better description. Something minor, because I'm currently testing something else. We also don't have all day to conduct the interview.
So I inform them of the first requirement. Tell them to use test-driven development and version control to write code that meets that requirement.
(Once again, I don't mind if they use unit test, pytest, nose, git, mercurial, fossil, or whatever. If they can do it in one of these, they'll be able to do it in the one I want in no time.)
When they've completed that, I'll give them the new requirement. And they'll have to write new unit tests, possibly modify some of the ones they've already written, and then implement application code to make the tests pass.
And I do it again once or twice more.
This reveals a lot about how they develop software, as well as their strengths and weaknesses.
The interview process is more complicated than this. What I've written above are just a few examples of what I might say in an interview.
And, if you're going on an interview soon, think about practicing with these questions beforehand. Perhaps it will help you prepare to pass with flying colors.
