I think it’s because success is its own brand of torture. The better you are the higher the expectations. The more clients you have the more deadlines and anxiety. The feeling like you have carried your fair share of burdens and responsibilities. You keep secrets, multi-task, dread the phone ringing, and internalize all the pressure and hope to get through the next day or week. You have lost your family — all semblance of a healthy life style. You have few friends, go home to an empty house, a little alcohol keeps you company — just enough to change the mood, but not enough to change behavior. SaaS Lawyer
There are plenty of days that you hope for a nice brand of cancer, a mild heart attack or some other way — anyway to push the reset button. Today maybe tomorrow you wake up dead and would welcome the relief.
There are days when money comes in from clients is almost a non-event. Its only going to bills. You will never be rich and even if you had money, your schedule is so tight . The nice car you bought is now twelve years old. The nice house you bought to raise your family was sold when the wife left. The sh** hole house you live in is cheap and affordable but doesn’t have a dishwasher.
One day you wake up and realize that happiness comes from within and while you are a highly trained professional with tons of education and training you are also losing your grip on what made you happy — can’t remember the last time that a thrill wasn’t also filled with dread. You wish the pain would stop — the tightness in your chest was relieved — the hurt and the sorrow of the disappointments of a life lived wasn’t the life believed.
The law is a cruel mistress. The harder you work the more intertwined it becomes. This is the dark side of the life lived in the law. The part that the TV shows can’t highlight — the part no Hollywood script writer can imagine. The evil dark side, the toll on the soul. Standing on a high wire — no net — no back-up plan — no hope that it will ever get better. You are doomed to this endless toil in a profession that doesn’t care, demands hard work and high standards all the time every time.
When you see a lawyer, all hunched up file in hand, glasses eschew, understand they are a veteran of a thousand psychic wars, their energy is spent and their armor is destroyed. While its true that no one gets out of this life, real life alive, its also true that some lawyers have walked the path, seen the underside of the belly of the beast and choose to go another way.
