Dinnerware is made of ceramic materials such as earthenware, stoneware, bone china, and porcelain. The widespread use of ceramic glazes with European roots has contributed to the popularity of ceramic crockery. Dinnerware used to be carved out of wood before being mass made. Industrialization and improvements in the use of ceramic led to the widespread introduction of inexpensive, washable tableware.
